Understandably, it is not possible to mention all craft items produced in the State of Sarawak, the ones that highlighted above are authentic to Sarawak and is endangered. There are also other range of craft items that is worth carrying back through check-in counters or hand carry like I always did. They are :

1) Orang Ulu’s Bunga Jalal

Another unique contribution from the Orang Ulu community. Bunga Jalal is carefully produced by “peeling” thin sheet of layers upon layers of Jelutung wood and skillfully twist and turn the “peels” into curls making it a perfect decor item even in the present day setting.

2) Tikar Lampit and kelasar

Tikar Kelasar is recognisable by the use of tree bark strips weaved in among the rattan peels where as the Lampits are weaved using entirely rattan strips and peels. These Sarawakian collections are highly sought after by tourists especially those coming from west Malaysia. Sarawakian-made tikar lampit and kelasar is becoming rare due to stiff competition from those cheaper ones flocking in from Indonesia.

3) Bemban mat and ajats

Bemban is an extremely durable material found in the swampy and low laying areas in Sarawak. Products made from bemban are very marketable due to its appearance and durability. However, supply of Bemban is inconsistent projecting serious stumping block for its marketability.

4) Bidayuh Tambok

Another contribution from the Bidayuhs used as collecting baskets in the fields. Although an functional item used by hunter and farmers, these baskets are decorated with colors depicting the level of creativity and artistic nature of the tribe in their everyday life and their handicrafts.

5) Tree bark products

Found only in the land of the hornbills, these Orang Ulu art piece is produced by harvesting the bark of the Temberan Tree or Pokok Tenkalong whose bark are shed seasonally and re-grown back naturally.

The harvested bark are then processed and beaten skillfully and dried before turning into a variety of products ranging from vest, purse, bags and etc.
